Disabling WiFiRanger Remote Assistance

A fundamental aspect of WiFiRanger’s design philosophy for more than a decade has been the ability to support it’s products through a secure, cloud-based link to WiFiRanger’s servers. This link provides for notifications of firmware updates, downloading of those updates, and it supports remote diagnostics of customer routers when needed by WiFiRanger support staff.

Although most customers have appreciated the benefits afforded by this capability, some have asked us to provide an ability to disable it. Therefore, WiFiRanger has implemented a feature which allows customers to disable this remote access. The purpose of this notice is to provide customers with information about how to implement this feature.

However, anyone contemplating using this new feature should understand that their Ranger will no longer automatically indicate the presence of firmware updates so long as it is enabled. Nor will you be able to download any such updates until you reverse your actions and re-enable Remote Assistance.

Also, the WiFiRanger Customer Service team will not be able to perform many diagnostic functions in the event of a problem with your Ranger. If you have a problem with your Ranger, please re-enable Remote Support before contacting Customer Service.

Lastly, a number of cloud-based WiFiRanger features such as SafeSurf and Configuration Backup will not be functional when Remote Assistance has been disabled.

Here are step-by-step directions for disabling Remote Assistance:

1. Make sure your WiFiRanger device is on the current firmware (version 7.1.0b11) and that your Ranger is online

2. Click on the Check for Updates/Cloud Disconnected link in the upper right corner of every WiFiRanger control panel page until blue bars start to scroll. They will scroll for a couple of minutes; you may have to click twice

3. Login into the admin page at “your control panel IP address” with /admin added.  The default username and password are admin/wfradmin (you will need to use the numeric address for the control panel, not mywifiranger.com)

4. click on the “SETUP” tab

5. Turn off “Sync Data”

6. Select “Admin” profile dropdown; load the “WFR Disable Remote Assistance” profile

7.  Click on “Save” at the bottom of the page to save your actions

Get the most out of a WiFiRanger system with an indoor & outdoor Pack. We recommend these solutions for more network versatility and functionality when compared to a standalone unit. All of the long-range WiFi, LAN ports, USB tethering, and upgradability features unite in these Packs. Furthermore, you will enjoy maximum wireless coverage, performance, and reliability when using a Pack. For all these reasons, we recommend a Pack if it fits your budget and installation criteria.

LTE Modems

Officially Supported & Verified Data-only Plans

Stay Online with Integrated LTE Modems & Data Plans

WiFiRanger Supports the Following Data Plans

Internet where you want it, when you want it. Keep mobile devices, media players, smart TVs, gaming controls, and computers connected while you travel. Link to nationwide 4G LTE for reliable, uninterrupted, in-motion and stationary coverage. From fully-integrated systems that provide faster speeds and increased range from WiFi sources to add-on 4G LTE routers, Winegard has the perfect cellular data device for any situation.

FreedomGO plans offer freedom and flexibility with:

  • Pay-as-you-go plans (no contracts or activation fees)
  • Packages ranging from 1 GB to 20 GB with no throttling (U.S. and Canada)
  • Nationwide 4G LTE coverage
  • In-motion and stationary connectivity

Choose a WiFiRanger indoor or outdoor router with an integrated LTE modem to take advantage of the Winegard FreedomGo data plans. Once you have a FreedomGo SIM you can activate your plan using the instructions found here.

There are several possible data plan options available on the market that may or may not work with a WiFiRanger integrated modem.

Currently, we only have plans from Winegard that are officially supported but other venders may work. For example, we have tested SIM cards from Millenicom in January 2021 and we found that their T-Mobile data plans worked with our products. However, continued operation of these data plans is not guaranteed by WiFiRanger since Millenicom is a third party. Also note that Millenicom data plans from carriers other than T-Mobile did not work with WiFiRanger products at the time of testing.

We ask that each customer research third party data plans for themselves and make the best choice possible for their own situation. In the coming months, we hope to have a variety of officially support data plans on our website. But at this time, we can only officially recommend the Winegard FreedomGO plans above. All other third party data plans may or may not work with your WiFiRanger products.

LTE Modem Considerations

There are advantages and disadvantages to almost every technology choice, and integrated LTE modems are no exception. For the sake of full disclosure, helping you make the best modem choice, we offer the below considerations:

Verizon Activation is Not Supported or Guaranteed on WiFiRanger Integrated LTE Modems
Changes in carrier plans and different geographies pose challenges to customers trying to activate and use Verizon SIM cards within embedded WiFiRanger LTE modems. If customers seek to utilize Verizon as their data carrier of choice on WiFiRanger, then the official recommendation is to do so with a supported Verizon MiFi, smartphone, or aircard via USB tethering or WiFi for WAN. WiFiRanger is currently in the process of obtaining official support with Verizon, but cannot guarantee Verizon data plans will work on integrated WiFiRanger modems at this time.

WiFiRanger is continuing to work through the Verizon approval process. Once completed, official support for Verizon data plans will be announced for nationwide acceptance and coverage of WiFiRanger integrated LTE modems on the Verizon network.

Category 4 Modem Compatible with T-Mobile / ATT Band 71
The Category 4 modem supports Band 71 (600MHz) which T-Mobile / ATT use for some of their Extended Range 4G LTE network. Neither the Category 6 or Category 12 modems support Band 71.

Category 6 and 12 Modems are Capable of Carrier-Aggregation
The Category 6 and 12 modems support carrier-aggregation which can increase the downlink speeds by double and triple when compared to non-carrier-aggregated modems (such as the Category 4 modem). This makes the Category 6 and 12 modems ideal for those desiring maximal performance and who do not need Band 71 support for T-Mobile / ATT.

Unable to Upgrade Routers to LTE Modems After Original Purchase
If unsure of whether to purchase an LTE modem for a Converge router (Poplar, Aspen, Teton, Denali, or Everest), consider that a modem cannot be purchased separately in the future. Instead, a new indoor or outdoor router would need to be purchased with an LTE modem installed. Suffice it to say that it is ideal to get an integrated LTE modem when initially purchasing a Converge router if you have the inclination to have LTE.
